Meeting on the Draft

On Dec. 1st CCMR helped host a discussion on a possible Draft along with the Survival Center at the University of Oregon. This meeting was inspired both by the current militarized climate with U.S. foreign policy and as a follow-up to the gathering, Nov. 19th with Israeli Refuseniks (see below) whom refused mandatory military service in Israel.

This event was a beginning to a discussion that will include further gatherings in 2005.

CCMR co-hosted the event "Israeli Refuseniks - Duty vs. Conscience", for three venues November 19th, 2004. In downtown Eugene, between 150 and 200 people listened to Noam Bahat and Shimri  Zasmeret tell of their  nearly two years in prison for refusing to participate in mandatory military service in the Israeli army due to their conscience regarding concerns surrounding the occupation of the Palestinian people.

Following the first presentation, the speakers also spoke with the University of Oregon student organization Hillel and yet another talk at the University.

Suarez Flyer
Military Father Speaks Out

CCMR hosted Fernando Suarez del Solar May 1st at Cozmic Pizza. Mr. Suarez lost his son, a U.S. marine, at the beginning of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, 2003. Suarez spoke of his loss, his trip to Iraq to visit the place where his son was slain and to meet with the people of Iraq to offer condolences for their losses. Suarez spoke passionately of his concern about the misleading information and ferver for which military recruiters are pursuing new recruits in general but especially within Latino communities.

The event was preceded with an anti-military/counter-recruitment Poster Art Contest (click here for "about the contest") and followed with music from local Cuban music from Azuquita.

hiphopshow HIP HOP SHOW

On October 10, 2003, CCMR hosted its first "counter-recruitment" hip hop show. Mario Africa started out the evening by providing us a rap on "Hip Hop and Resistance" and later shared with us a few verses with local musicians backing him.

With Lafa Taylor as our MC, over 250 youth jammed to the consciencious music of  local youth musicians.  Womb Dialectic, from Portland, joined us to help make this an even more awesome evening.  And who should show up to raise the energy by laying down her own verse but, Laura "Peace" Kelly.
