RECRUITERS: STOP LYING.

WE KNOW THE REAL SCORE!
Draw It!            Paint It!

POLITICIANS: WE’RE TIRED OF FRIENDS DYING.
GO FIGHT YOUR OWN WAR!

What is it?
The "Stop the Violence" poster-art contest is sponsored by Committee for Countering Military  Recruitment. The intention of the art contest is to support youth to develop a political critique of the violence inherent in a culture of war and the controversial means by which the military fills its ranks. CCMR believes that the expression of this critical thinking through art will help empower youth to educate themselves and to ask tough questions before they make momentous decisions that could result in the ultimate sacrifice; their life!

Why the Theme?
Why have an anti-militarist/counter-military recruitment theme for an art contest?
Because the U.S. Military has an ANNUAL budget of $2.6 BILLION just for recruiting young people into the military and they don't share the numbers below while recruiting!
  • The military spends approx. $11,000 per recruit convincing them to join.  New York Times 2000
  • 75% of Black and 67% of Latinos reported experiencing racially offensive behavior.       Veterans of America  2001
  •  approx. 1/3 of the army forces are people of color, yet only 16.9% are officers.                 Dept. of Defense Almanac 2000
  • 90% of women reported being sexually harassed.   Dept of Defense 1996
  • 1 in 3 women reported being raped     Murdoch and Nichols 1995
  • 1 in 5 women reported that they were denied a raise or promotion because they refused to have sex in exchange.   Murdoch and Nichols 1995
  • 871 service members reported being harassed because they were gay in 2000.                     Legal Defense Network 2000
  • The Department of Labor in 2000 reported that there were over 421,000 unemployed vets
  • 72% of veterans believe their pension is unfair.
  • 1/3 of all homeless in America are veterans
  • The average federal financial aid from Pell grants and Stafford student loans is 20% more than the GI bill.   Rand 2000

ALSO...
  •     Of the "$50,000" promised for college, less than 6% get the full amount and only up to 50% get part.
  •     Only 12% of men and 8% of women report learning a skill which transfers to civilian life.
Because of numbers like these, we need to help our friends look critically at the military before they decide to join. One of the ways we can do this is to educate people by expressing our viewpoints through ART.
