Pittsburgh Soldier Injured In Iraq Asked To Pay Back Bonus Money
ThePittsburghChannel
Nov. 22, 2007
PITTSBURGH - For one Pittsburgh-area soldier, the holiday season came
with an almost unbelievable letter from the Pentagon, telling him to
give back nearly $3,000 in bonus money for time not served.
A roadside bomb in Iraq injured Pfc. Jordan Fox. He suffered permanent
damage to his right eye and was discharged, coming home to a hero's
welcome.
"The explosion was directly underneath me," Fox said. "It lifted all
of this armor off of it and lifted the Bradley off the ground. I was
knocked unconscious. "
He was discharged in September, two years before completing his
enlistment period. Now, the Department of Defense is demanding pay
back the $3,000.
"I was very shocked that I actually had a bill in the mail of them
telling me I owed them money, because I wasn't able to complete my
full term," said Fox.
"People are outraged that we're denying injured service men and woman
full bonuses that they were entitled to," said Rep. Jason Altmire.
Altmire is crafting legislation to protect the bonuses of enlistees.
Fox challenged the government and will not have to give back his bonus.
If necessary, Fox said he would speak out on behalf of other soldiers
who are told they owe the government money.
