Parent support of military service drops
United Press International
May 14, 2007
Defense Department officials in Washington
report a significant drop in the number of parents who support military
service for their sons or daughters.
According to a survey conducted within the last year, only 59 percent of
fathers and 52 percent of mothers are in favor of their children joining
the military, The Christian Science Monitor reports.
In 2003, the number of fathers supporting military service was 77 percent
while the number of mothers in favor was 65 percent.
Marine Corps recruiter Gunnery Sgt. Brian Bensen deals with the problem of
parental support firsthand.
Working in southwestern Pennsylvania, Bensen says he is recruiting the
parents as much as he is the kid he wants in uniform.
"Mom and dad raised that child, and they deserve me coming to talk to
them," Bensen says.
One high school student told Bensen his dad didn't want him to go to war
and thinks the whole military thing is stupid.
