Vandals target Army recruiting display at UA

Dale Quinn, arizona daily star

Nov 16, 2007

Vandals struck an Army recruitment display at the University Arizona
Mall overnight Wednesday, spray-painting swastikas and anti-military
messages on signs and trailers.
"Get paid to murder, rob and rape," was written in yellow spray paint
on a trailer with a photo of a military helicopter and the slogan
"There's strong and then there's Army strong."
Four swastikas were sprayed on glass doors that led into another
trailer that people could walk through for information.
"This way to hell," was written on stairs leading into the trailer.
The vandalism occurred sometime between 8 p.m. Wednesday and 5 a.m.
Thursday, said Sgt. Eugene Mejia, a University of Arizona Police
Department spokesman.
Police have no leads or suspects, Mejia said. A maintenance crew
arrived shortly after 9 a.m. and quickly cleaned the yellow spray paint.
No recruiters were available to talk about the vandalism Thursday morning.
Mejia said the UA Police Department would need the public's help to
track down the offender.
"These types of crimes occur during the night when there's not a lot
of traffic," Mejia said. "We rely heavily on people to report
suspicious activities in the area in order to solve these cases."
UA students said while they support people's freedom to speak their
minds, vandalizing an Army recruitment display isn't the way to do it.
Oliver Stickroth, a materials-science engineering junior, said
vandals who demonstrate their ideas in such ways are just as extreme
as the people with whom they disagree.
Voice opposition toward politicians who initiated the war, he said,
not at soldiers who are just doing their job.
"There's a way to express opposition to this war, but it's not
putting swastikas on the U.S. Army's things," he said.
Bao Yang, a physical-education senior, said people will have their
opinions, but defacing others' property is a mean-spirited way to
express them.
"If you want to voice your opinion, write a speech, or do something
more concrete than just spray-painting, " she said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the UA Police Department at 621-8273.
